Community Conversations 2013-2014 Summary Report

What we heard

Between September 2013 and February 2014, the public was invited to discuss current and future Library services with Chief Librarian Marcellus Turner at a series of 12 "Community Conversations." Turner also provided an update on implementation of the Library levy, approved by Seattle voters in August 2012.


Participating patrons were encouraged to give specific feedback about five Library service priorities: youth and family learning; technology and access; community engagement; Seattle culture and history; and re-imagined spaces. Turner also fielded questions from patrons about a wide range of topics.

By the numbers:

Over 140 questions


The community values:

Over 20% of the questions were about collections


Over 16% of the questions were about programs, resources, and outreach to support early learning and teens


Over 10% of the questions related to more programming and making programming more accessible at the branches.


There were many "how-to" questions, including:

Other areas of interest included:

  • Add more comfortable seating and spaces
  • Provide support for our homeless friends and neighbors
  • Stay open later in the evening or provide longer open hours generally
  • Provide updates on the Library's relationship with the King County Library System and the Reciprocal Use Agreement
