About the International District / Chinatown Branch

The International District / Chinatown Branch of The Seattle Public Library has:

ARCHITECTURE

The new International District/Chinatown Branch, 713 Eighth Ave. S., opened June 11, 2005. It was the 16th project completed under the "Libraries for All" building program. The $735,000 branch is located inside International District Village Square II, in space leased from the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority. The complex also includes 57 units of affordable family housing, a community center, retail space, and underground parking, which branch patrons can pay to use. (See the International District / Chinatown Branch Building Facts for more information.)

The space was designed by Miller Hayashi Architects and built by Cope Construction Co.

Miller Hayashi Architects designed the east-facing space to take advantage of the 20-foot floor-to-ceiling height and created a sense of unity with an interesting ceiling canopy made of ribbons of wood. Long hanging lamps illuminate the space, which feels urban, modern and elegant.

The branch also includes artwork by San Francisco artist Rene Yung. Yung used teacups collected from local residents and companies to create sculptural artworks for the branch.

See Art at the Branch for more information.

LIBRARIES FOR ALL CAPITAL PROJECTS AND THE INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT / CHINATOWN BRANCH

In 1998, voters approved the $196.4 million "Libraries for All" bond measure and The Seattle Public Library Foundation pledged to contribute privately raised money to improve the Library system. The plan included building a new International District/Chinatown Branch.

Construction began in November 2004. The new branch opened Saturday, June 11, 2005.
