Fact Sheet for Improvements to the Capitol Hill Branch

The 11,600-square-foot branch, which opened in May 2003, was the fourth branch to open under the "Libraries for All" building program to improve the Library system.

After 11 years of use, the carpeting throughout the branch and the flooring on the stairs needed to be replaced.

Since the branch needed to close for that work, the Library also relocated some desks and shelves to increase efficiency and flexibility and make the entry more comfortable.

Improvements included:

  • A single staff service desk to make it easier for patrons to know where to get help
  • Relocated holds area and additional self-service checkout station
  • Shorter shelves near entry
  • Laptop bar in the northeast seating alcove
  • More electrical and data boxes
  • Repainted and refurnished quiet study room on the second floor

Budget:

  • Approximately $220,000
    • Sources of funds
      • The Seattle Public Library Foundation
      • Library Capital Improvement Program budget

Key dates:

  • Jan. 2, 2015: Holds that have not arrived by Jan. 2 will be sent to the Central Library unless patrons have selected an alternate pickup location
  • Jan. 11, 2015: Last day for patrons to check out materials from the branch
  • Jan. 12, 2015: Branch, book drop, garage close
  • Feb. 7, 2015: Branch, book drop, garage reopen
