Nancy Pearl discusses

Join us at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5 at the Central Library for the launch of local rock star librarian Nancy Pearl’s debut novel, "George and Lizzie," an emotionally riveting story about an unlikely marriage at a crossroads.

Details about the event

Make Elaine's Mandel Bread, as seen in the book:

4 eggs

1 cup canola oil

3½ - 4 cups of flour

1 cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla

½ cup chopped nuts or dried cranberries or a mixture. You can also mix in cut up dried apricots or trail mix. Also, ½ cup is arbitrary – you can do more or less, depending on your mood

Cinnamon/sugar mixture

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Beat eggs until foamy, add sugar, oil, flour, baking powder, vanilla and nuts/dried fruit/trail mix.
  • Divide dough into 4 parts. Make a long roll out of each and put on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 30 minutes. Slice each roll while it is still warm and put back on cookie sheet.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar mixture and bake for 8 minutes or until cookies are brown. Turn cookies over and sprinkle again with cinnamon/sugar. Bake another 8 minutes.
  • Cool and store in airtight container.
